Trigger Point Therapy is incorporated with Therapeutic Massage, Sports Massage, Pregnancy Massage, Hot Stone Massage and Medical Massage.
You may hear your therapist refer to a “trigger point.” Simply, a trigger point is a spot that is painful. It is called a trigger point because it “triggers” a painful response.
But a trigger point is more than a just a tender or painful spot in your muscle tissue. Trigger Points actually can cause referal pain in tissues that are supplied by nerves. Trigger points are located in a taut band of muscles fibers. The trigger point is the most tender point in the band.
Your therapist has been trained to locate and “deactivate” them using finger pressure. One technique is to pick up the muscle fibers in a pincer grip or hold on the trigger point until the pain subsides – help the spot unwind.
What You Should Know About Trigger Point Therapy
Normally when a therapist finds a trigger point in your muscle, it has been there a while, and it will likely take more than one massage to get rid of it.
These points are often areas of chronic “holding” and you need to learn how to move in different ways to keep them from recurring. Work with your therapist to help the trigger point “ease” and perhaps some specific exericises to “retrain” your muscle.
