Medical Massage

Massage is becoming one of the most frequently mentioned of the “alternative medicine,” or CAM. Since 1992, the National Institute of Health has been sponsoring studies that have reported the benefits of seeing your massage therapist.
Medical Massage is known more and more as the means to promote a healthy body and mind. By combining several techniques such as Neuromuscular Re-Education, Trigger Point Therapy, Muscle Energy Techniques, Cross-Fiber Friction, etc you and your therapist can work toward reducing your complaints if not eliminating them!
Regardless of the particular technique, research shows that treatment by a massage therapist accomplishes a minimum of two things that have far reaching effects: 1) improved circulation and 2) relaxation.
In addition to simply pushing the blood and lymph through the tissues, massage relaxes the nervous system. As the muscles and other tissues relax, the blood and lymph vessels expand and move these fluids more effectively. Thus, even if only one area is treated, this relaxation effect can cause a domino effect.
Dr. Tiffany Field, founder of the Touch Research Institue, has said: “in all the studies we get reduced anxiety levels, reduced depression or depressed mood state, reduced cortisol levels, which are an index of stress. We think those things happen because the system is in a greater parasympathetic balance…” Massage Magazine, Sept/Oct 1996.
